12 Days of Afrodroids

As many people claim, art has no intrinsic value. There isn’t much value to a canvas and a little paint. But that is not why people value art, is it? We appreciate art for the story it tells us, for the narrative behind the painting. Not just what the artist conveys through the art, but the history of the work itself. Some of the most valuable pieces of art have a rich and storied history, from famous previous owners and incidents to stories of the artists themselves.

We're at the beginning of a new era. NFTs are becoming the new popular form of artwork. However, what many of these artworks lack is a distinctive backstory. They appear to be plain images with what amounts to a token of authenticity on them. Some artists are changing this perspective, by giving their artwork creative lore that is representative of their artwork.

Afrodroids is a collection of 12,117 pieces of art, based on the theme of Afrofuturism, and created by Owo Anietie, a Nigerian artist. Each piece of art depicts a dystopian future, where humanoid robots called Afrodroids have taken over an apocalyptic version of the earth. Besides this very creative backstory, 20% of the proceeds from the sale of each Afrodroid artwork goes to the Dream Catchers Academy for Girls, a non-profit Academy, offering educational opportunities, leadership skills, and a better life for street and underprivileged girls, through dance, drama, music, and visual arts. In the Christmas of 2021, Afrodroids conducted ‘12 days of Afrodroids’, a giveaway of 12 artworks to show their appreciation for their community. This was done in recognition of their highly active community of users, who engage in the trading of Afrodroid artworks on NFT trading platforms. Even this giveaway had a story behind it, about the Afrodroids learning about the human tradition of Christmas, and celebrating it.

For managing this airdrop, Afrodroids partnered with Appreciation Token. Appreciation Token is a project that provides ways to improve community engagement using means like airdrops, tokens, metaverse wearables and much more. This process involves analysing the user community to find what they value, the creation of the assets that will be distributed as part of the airdrop, and finally the actual distribution itself.

As part of the lottery system, 12 unique Afrodroid artwork holders were identified, for each of the 12 Christmas days. Appreciation Token was responsible for conducting this lottery system, for identifying the 12 winners. Each day’s unique artwork was deposited directly into the ethereum wallet of the winner.

Apart from this, Afrodroids also wished to reward the top 12 collectors of their artwork. Appreciation Token was responsible for analysing the market in order to identify the top holders of Afrodroid artwork. Each of these people received all 12 artworks.

Partnering with Appreciation Token allowed the Afrodroids team to conduct this giveaway smoothly and successfully. Their custom smart contracts allowed the hassle-free creation and distribution of the artworks and also the identification of the top Afrodroid holders, to whom the Afrodroid team wished to show their recognition.
